The Boston area was settled by Native Americans in approximately 12,000 to 9,000 BCE. Norse legends (not published util 1837) suggest explorers may have reached the area in approximately 1,000 CE, European explorers did not arrive until approximately 1500, followed by fisherman, trappers and traders. Some 3,000 members of the Massachuset, a tribe of the Eastern Algonquin nation, settled in the Boston area by approximately 1,600. They lived by hunting fishing, and farming. Rivalries existed among various sub-tribes and their overall numbers were drastically reduced by the infectious diseases brought by the Europeans, so that by the time English settlers began to arrive, their numbers had been reduced to some 500.
